Helping October

No matter how and what we do, as long as we do it with our heart, every little helps.

During October, you might have noticed a little pink ribbon on the front page of this blog, a simple way for me to help raising awareness for breast cancer. The world seems to be in so much pain, with war, disagreements, protests, violence, illness, diseases and many more… as basic human, we don’t “really” look at it, not until it touches us or someone dear to us, then we wake up and care a lot more. I think it shouldn’t be like that. I think we should do every little bit possible to help.

This month also saw the release of the second edition of Feeding Hong Kong Recipe Book. The book launch was very successfuly held at the Bloomberg facilities here in Hong Kong, dutifully hosted by the incredibly nice and down to earth Bloomberg news anchor Rishaad Salamat, where Peggy of Grassroots Pantry, and myself had the privilege to share our experience with Gabrielle Kirstein, Executive Director of Feeding Hong Kong, in front of the audience on stage. Collecting food to feed people is a very sad reflection on our society. How did we get here? How can we work for money, use this money to buy food and put this food in the garbage when there are people starving in our streets? If you think about it for a minute, it’s just inconceivable. After that, how can we look straight in the eyes of a child that goes to bed hungry in our city? Visit Feeding Hong Kong website and get your copy of the book!

October was also home of the International Chef’s Day! An event I attend every year (except last as I was sick :( ) International Chef’s Day celebrates chefs around the world, and in Hong Kong, Chefs come together to prepare lunch for 600 people coming from several institutions such as the Fu Hong Society, which is the organism behind Best Buddies Hong Kong. The event was generously hosted at the Disneyland Hong Kong Hotel. Seriously, you have NO IDEA the amount of joy we bring to the people attending the event – of course when Mickey Mouse shows up, we are very little, but when we help people with their meal, it’s just incredible!

Princess for a day? ;)

And on Tuesday 28th of October, as I was saying in my last post, I will be flipping burgers and baking bacon profiteroles at the Butcher’s Club in support of Pathfinders. A charity that support distressed migrant single mother and their kids in Hong Kong. I am not sure if it’s all the sugar I ate during my life, but my heart seems to be crumbling at the sight of children in pain. It’s a built-in feature I have that just can’t be overridden.

The month of October has nothing to do with all this, it can and should be every month that we spend a few days of our time helping others. Sometimes, I am wondering how did we ever reach that level of ego-centrism, thinking that leaving others to suffer without helping was ok…

No matter how we help, it’s always a step forward; when is the last time you’ve helped?
